Youth Director and Assistant Director of Education, Andy Harkavy
 Andy Harkavy is excited to be Temple Beth El’s Youth Director and Assistant Director of Education. He is happy to be back in a southern Jewish community! Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he was a member of Temple Kehillat Chaim (TKC) and attended Camp Coleman in Cleveland, GA, for two years. After his Bar Mitzvah, he continued on to Confirmation and participated in the Madrichim program. He became an active member of TKC’s Junior Youth Group (JYG) and remained involved throughout high school in NFTY-SAR. During his junior and senior years in high school, he served on his local chapter’s (RAFTY) Senior Youth Group Board. Andy attended the University of Georgia and worked as the Youth Advisor for the NFTY-SAR chapter (AFTY) in Athens for two years. After graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Spanish, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, to serve as the Steinhardt Jewish Campus Service Corps (JCSC) Fellow at Ohio State Hillel doing outreach and programming. This experience, combined with his trips to Israel, Alternative Breaks in New Orleans and New York City, and other Jewish immersion experiences, made him change his career path, and he moved to Maryland to attend Graduate School. While in Baltimore, Andy taught 8th grade at BEIT-RJ (the local Reform Jewish high school) and 7th grade at Beth El Congregation of Baltimore. He worked for Jewish Volunteer Connection serving as a mentor and guide to teenagers planning their own community service projects. During Summer 2009, he worked at Henry S. Jacobs Camp in Utica, Mississippi, serving as the Maskilim Unit Head for rising 6th & 7th graders. In May 2010, he received a Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service from the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University. In his free time, Andy enjoys biking and playing racquetball, Frisbee and other recreational sports.
