Sunday, April 18th, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm in Gorelick Hall, LJCC Dr. Nora Rubel of the University of Rochester to Speak on “The Settlement” Cook Book Temple Beth El Sisterhood has partnered with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library to bring to Charlotte Dr. Nora Rubel, Assistant Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester. Dr. Rubel, who received her PhD in 2005 from UNC Chapel Hill, will be our featured guest for a talk entitled, “The Settlement” Cook Book: Matzoh Balls, Lobster Bisque, and the Transformation of the Jewish American Kitchen." Dr. Rubel examines Lizzie Black Kander, author of The Way to A Man’s Heart: “The Settlement” Cook Book and her book’s influence upon twentieth century Jewish Americanization. While the intent of the cookbook was to encourage Russian Jewish immigrants to leave behind their particular ethnic flavors in order to assimilate to the New World, the success of the book has been in its promotion of cultural pluralism. Originally published as a pamphlet in 1901, Kander created an ideal of Jewish American domestic life that has connected generations of women with its savory recipes and household tips and is regarded as the most successful fundraising cookbook in America. The talk concludes with Q&A, followed by samples of recipes prepared by Sisterhood. Friday, May 14th, 8:00 pm Sisterhood Shabbat and Lamed Vavnik Award D’Var Torah, celebrate the generations and honor a Sisterhood member that helps sustain our community behind the scenes. -- Women of Reform Judaism, an affiliate of the Union for Reform Judaism, is the collective voice and presence of women in congregational life. Stronger together, we support the ideals and enhance the quality of Jewish living to ensure the future of progressive Judaism in North America, Israel, and around the world.
