What is Temple Beth El University?

Temple Beth El University (TBEU) is a Jewish literacy program designed by congregants for congregants, which aims to provide basic Jewish literacy for all at an affordable cost. Acknowledging the bottomless sea of potential Jewish educational topics, TBEU aims to teach at multiple levels by providing both basic and advanced Jewish courses of all kinds.

Anyone may take a single course; those who choose to participate in the entire, multi-semester program will ultimately receive a TBEU Certificate of Jewish Literacy. TBEU is open to Temple Beth El members and non-members, to the Jewish community and the larger community. This is an excellent option for parents who drop off their children at Hebrew High on Wednesday nights.

Curriculum and Course Offerings

Our curriculum has been structured to approach Jewish Literacy in terms of the three pillars of Jewish learning: Torah, God and Israel.  Within each pillar, both core and elective classes will be offered.  Core classes will be 2 hours in duration and electives will meet for one hour.

We’ve racked our brains to think up a list of courses which will attract the interests of Jews and non-Jews alike.  There are so many topics which Jewish adults in our community have not had the avenues to learn about and we’ve listened to your suggestions.  In formulating the TBEU curriculum, the Adult Education Committee strove to provide a program that would enable students to learn about our rich culture, religion, and past in easily digestible class formats without too great a time commitment away from family and busy schedules.  Our goal is to promote learning and Jewish literacy.

When Can I Get Started?

Classes began in the Fall of 2009, and consist of three annual “mini-mesters” of 3 weeks each. TBEU classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with a coffee break around 8:00 pm for class changes and socializing. Any student could potentially take 6 electives or 3 core classes in a given year (or a combination thereof). Click here to register.

Certificate of Jewish Literacy

Upon achieving enough credit hours, students will receive special recognition by Temple staff and clergy at a Congregational Shabbat service, along with a Certificate of Jewish Literacy.  It is indeed a great achievement to have completed the full course of study.  Graduates of the certificate program will no doubt prove to be an invaluable resource to the Temple, congregation, greater Jewish community and extended community as literate Jewish adults

Details about the accumulation of credits toward the TBEU Certificate of Jewish Literacy are being finalized now.

What about Costs?

We’ve made a conscientious effort to minimize costs. In order to help partially defray necessary costs (honoraria for non-TBE faculty, materials, snacks and beverages), we are asking for our students to pay Chai ($18) per hour, in other words, a 2-hour core class will cost double-Chai. 1 hour electives will only cost Chai. The non-member fee will be $26 per hour. Financial assistance and  scholarships are always available.
