Sterling Elementary School Partnership

PARTNERSHIP WITH STERLING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Temple Beth El has joined with Sterling Elementary School as a part of CMS’s Faith Community Partnership program. Both the congregation and the Religious School will have many opportunities over the next year to participate in this program. By way of introduction, Sterling Elementary is located off of South Blvd. in Pineville. 634 students attend the school, 89% of who qualify for free or reduced lunch putting them in the poverty category as defined by the state. The school’s population is 43% African-American, 37% Caucasian, 16% Hispanic and 4% Asian. Sterling is designated as an Equity Plus school, which qualifies the school for additional resources for teachers from both the state and the county. Sterling is also a Paideia Academy with programs that provide a rigorous liberal arts education teaching self-development and continued life-long learning. A variety of teaching methods are used at the school to complement the students’ varied learning styles. Despite the additional resources available to the school, their student population has a great need for support and help from the community. Projects for the year include a backpack drive, gently used or new book donations, weekly tutors, lunch buddies, grounds help, student incentives, adopt a family during the holidays, and test proctors. If you are interested in participating in the partnership, please contact Lisa Garfinkle at slgarfinkle@windstream.net. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Our partner school is in need of the following: 1. Sponsors for their 5th grade field trip to Atlanta. Cost is $300 per child. Partial sponsorships happily accepted! 2. Math Mentors -- to help students learn basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts before school or during lunch. This would involve drilling with flash cards, which the school would provide. 3. Volunteers with a background or interest in science to help expand hands-on science experiences for 3-5th graders at the school. (Either during school hours, after school or on weekends). Contact Lisa Garfinkle if you would like to volunteer at slgarfinkle@windstream.net. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Sterling Elementary in the News Click here for a news story and TV clip about Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's visit to Sterling Elementary on September 15th, 2010. Secretary Duncan was there to praise the school for its huge turnaround in student achievement. You will see Renie Fernbach, one of our own wonderful Temple volunteers, in the news clip. Way to go Renie! Very exciting! |
