Scholar-in-Residence

Sadie Levin Scholar-in-Residence Weekend - February 19 - 21, 2010

Join us as we welcome Rabbi Zahara Davidowitz-Farkas, former dean of HUC-Jewish Institute of Religion and coordinator of Jewish pastoral care at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and current director of 9/11 spiritual care long term recovery for the American Red Cross.

As a former director of the New York Board of Rabbis Chaplaincy Program, Rabbi Zahara will be our guest speaker for a most engaging series of sermons, informal talks, and text study about bikkur cholim, caring for the sick.  Rabbi Zahara will not only teach us the important lessons we learn in coping with our own personal crises, but also how in the midst of our suffering, we can make connections and find new meaning and strength in our lives.  Sharing her hands-on experience as a disaster response chaplain after the national tragedies of 9/11 and Virginia Tech, Rabbi Zahara will surely provide our congregation with lessons that can bring enrichment, compassion, and insight into our lives.

The sessions will be as follows:
  • Friday, Feb. 19, 8:00 pm, in the Sam Lerner Center as part of our Shabbat Services: “The Horse on the Dining Room Table: a Parable”
  • Saturday, Feb. 20, 9:00 am, in Luski Hall: “Bikkur Cholim: What our texts teach”
  • Saturday, Feb. 20, 5:00 pm, in Luski Hall: Havdalah and “Eyewitness to the Aftermath of 9/11 and Virginia Tech”
  • Sunday, Feb. 21, 10:30 am, in Gorelick Hall: Brunch* and “The Daily Discipline of Gratitude”
*RSVPs and payment for brunch ($8/adults; $6/children 12 and under) are required by February 17. Click here to RSVP.

This Scholar-in-Residence is being made possible by the generosity of Norm Levin in memory
of his mother, Sadie Levin. Like Norm, Sadie gave time, passion and energy
toward building the Jewish community.
