Youth Director Job Description – Full Time

Temple Beth El is searching for a dynamic, creative individual to serve as our first full-time Youth Director. This person will be a full part of our professional team, and will be responsible for overseeing and visioning the congregation’s growing Youth Department.

Programmatic and Educational Responsibilities

  • Oversee TBE’s vibrant Youth Department
    • Serve as advisor for LIBERTY (High school youth group)
      • Plan monthly+ local events (social, religious, social action)
      • Oversee LIBERTY board and hold biweekly board meetings
      • Mentor LIBERTY youth and aid in student-run programming
      • Attend and chaperone regional and national NFTY events
    • Oversee Other Youth Groups: [3-4, grades 5-6 grades, 8 grade]
      • Recruit, hire and supervise advisors
      • Coordinate publicity
      • Administer youth groups, including membership and publicity
      • Attend and chaperone Hatikvah Kallah (regional 7-8 grade event), along with eighth grade advisor
    • Work closely with Asst/Assoc Rabbi on 7th grade youth group
      • Rabbi serves as advisor to group
      • Help coordinate administrative aspects, including publicity and reservations
      • Attend LIBERTY Sheva events (usually Sunday morn.) as additional staff
  • Coordinate 2-prong Madrichim Program (Religious School/B’nei Mitzvah Madrichim)
    • Administer program
    • Run training/leadership development programs
    • Coordinate with Religious School Director, Cantor, B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator
  • Teach in 7th grade religious school program - Weekdays and Sundays
  • Teach in Hebrew High (Wednesday nights)
  • Coordinate College Connection Program in conjunction with a lay leader
  • Keep regular office hours and be available to youth; supervise future youth lounge
  • Attend grade level Shabbat dinners (approx one per month)
  • Potentially spend part of summer at Camp Coleman as unit head or program staff (1 or 2 sessions)
  • Potentially staff biennial youth Israel trips
  • Potentially staff annual Confirmation class trip to Washington, DC

 Administrative and Communication Responsibilities 

  • Interface with professional staff and clergy. Ultimate responsibility is to Senior Rabbi through Assistant/Associate Rabbi.
  • Serve as staff liaison to Youth Activities Committee (YAC). Attend monthly meetings. Work closely with YAC chairs.
  • Represent Youth Department to Temple Board
  • Prepare annual budget for youth department. Maintain financial records.
  • Interface with parents for purposes of publicity and to recruit chaperones/drivers
  • Contribute monthly articles to temple bulletin. Assist youth leaders in composing articles.
  • Maintain and grow involvement in NFTY at regional and national levels.
  • Participate as TBE representative to Charlotte Jewish Teen Coalition.

 Skills Desired and/or Required 

  • Knowledgeable about Judaism (higher Jewish education or BA in Judaic Studies desirable)
  • Involvement in and knowledge of Reform Judaism
  • Previous Jewish programmatic experience (Jewish camping experience desirable)
  • Good organizational and communication skills (oral and written); web savvy
  • Comfort with leading informal worship services and other rituals in youth context. (Musical ability desirable.)
