Rabbi's Thoughts

LIBERTY's New Home!

After months and years of waiting, on November 20th LIBERTY officially moved into its new youth lounge in our new building. We have been very fortunate that several members of our congregation have donated wonderful equipment including a refrigerator, a microwave, an air hockey table, a PlayStation II, and a stereo system to the new room. It is my hope and belief that having this new place for our youth to congregate, hold meetings, hang out, do homework, and share meals will increase the popularity of our group and bring much needed continuity to our monthly programming and out-of-town trips.

From this point on, Thursday nights will be LIBERTY night in the youth lounge. Students in grades 9-12 are invited to come hang out there on Thursday evenings and take part in the activities we offer. Often we will show movies, hold Madden Football and NBA Live PlayStation II tournaments, hold meetings, and other various programs. (All information regarding programming can be found on the Temple website by clicking on Youth News.)

Other nights the lounge will simply be made available as a safe and fun place for our kids to hang out. There will always be adult supervision in the room, and on Wednesday nights before Hebrew High I will be there myself to challenge anyone to a Madden football challenge, watch a movie, play some Air Hockey, or just hang out. We will also have some tables available if anyone would a like a place to come and study or do homework. And beginning soon, we will also hold 8th grade nights in the lounge when 8th graders will be allowed to use the lounge to hang out and plan their own activities.

While the lounge looks great and we are very excited about it, there are still some other things that we need to make our room complete. One glaring need at this time is furniture. If you have any furniture that you are looking to get rid of, or you would like to contribute in other ways to our Youth Group or the lounge, please contact me at (704) 366-1948 or jbarras@beth-el.com for information on how you can help.

I urge you as well to check out our new Youth News link on our web site (www.beth-el.com). There you will find constantly updated information on Sheva, Junior Youth Group, our eighth grade program, and LIBERTY. We have so many wonderful things happening with our youth these days, and things are only getting better!

L’Shalom,
Jeremy Barras
