President's Message

Lots of people ask me about all the changes we are having at Temple Beth El. As everyone is aware, Rabbi Spitalnic is now in Boca Raton, Florida, having led her final service here on December 22nd. Rabbi Schindler, who is looking forward to adding a new member to her family any day now starts her maternity leave on February 1st.

In the next few weeks and months, our professional staff will be redoubling their efforts and working extra hard to keep an array of services and programming we have planned going as smoothly as possible. I hope that we will give them all the support they need and express appreciation for all that they will be doing in the next few months.

To fill the position held by Rabbi Spitalnic, we have listed our opening with the CCAR Placement Service and are currently reviewing resumes from Rabbis in the field who are interested in exploring joining our professional team. We are fortunate to have received several resumes from some dynamic, enthusiastic and caring individuals.

Initially, we will screen the potential applicants by telephone and then invite those to Charlotte that appear to be a potentially good fit with our congregation to meet a wide range of our members. If you are interested in participating in meetings with these candidates, please let Arthur Kramer know.

Charlotte is a very desirable position for many Assistant and Associate Rabbis. Unfortunately, however, there is a severe shortage of Rabbis nationally at present. This means that each of the candidates we may find interesting may have multiple job offers from which to choose. As a result, it is possible that we might need to explore other interim staffing patterns should we not be able to entice a favorite candidate to come to Charlotte. I know we all think this is highly unlikely, because of our Carolina blue skies, gentle winters, and fantastic congregation, but it is possible, nonetheless! We will keep you posted about the developments as they occur.

A couple of other notes:
The Nominating Committee for the Temple Board will be meeting in the next few weeks. If you are interested in being considered for a Board position, please give me a call.

If you have not yet made a pledge to the Challenge Grant, please seriously consider doing so. Every dollar that is donated is matched at 50% by our anonymous donor. We have a goal of raising $180,000 that will be matched by $90,000. Your pledge can go a long way toward reducing the long-term debt of our congregation. If you have questions about this, please give me a call. I’d love to talk with you about this fantastic opportunity.

As always, please call me at (704) 759-0012 or email me at: barbarakatz@mindspring.com with questions, concerns, or criticisms. I appreciate hearing them all.

Sincerely,
Barbara Katz
