Kramer's Remarks

“Did I Say Mistake?”

I was minding my own business, walking around the Temple and I accidentally went into a Brotherhood meeting. What a mistake! There they were, Sid Cojac, Howard Epstein, Doug Gentile, Jeff Garis, Harvey Katowitz, Jim Safran, Peter Levine and Andy Weingarten. Before I even said, “Hello,” they started firing questions. “Why is there a deficit? When are we replacing Rabbi Spitalnic?” Not, “Hello Arthur…How are you? Thanks for doing such a great job at the Temple.” Just questions. But then, after a spirited debate, during which Sid used the expression, “with all due respect” at least ten times, they asked a great question. “What else can Brotherhood do to help Temple Beth El?”

In the past years, the Brotherhood has done a great deal. They have helped the youth with their programming. They’ve assisted with Room in the Inn and other Social Action projects. They run great fundraisers like Casino night. They created the Star of Life so Temple members can mark significant events. They sponsor programs with Jewish Family Services, usher at services, and so much more. I was more than happy to answer that question. I gave them a list of ideas and they promised to choose one of them. And then, without asking, a motion was made to contribute $500 to the Challenge Grant to help reduce the deficit. As you know by now, that translates into a $750 reduction. So I guess going to the meeting wasn’t such a big mistake after all.

By the way, before I left they told me to remind everyone that all males in the congregation should join Brotherhood. They not only contribute to the Temple’s welfare but also have lots of fun. Come to one of their Sunday brunches or call Jeff Garis and get involved.

There is no quiz this week but a challenge. Rabbi Bennett pointed out to me that this year, 2002 is a palindromic year. I don’t know if that’s really a word but it came from the Rabbi so who am I to question it. You know what a palindrome is. It’s a sentence that reads the same frontward and backwards. For example, “Live not on evil” or “Step on no pets.” So, a special prize will be awarded to the person who comes up with the best palindrome. I am hopeful that this will be before the year 2112. Send them in the usual way. By email at info@beth-el.com or fax at 704-366-1365 or mail them to my attention at the Temple.

In the mean time, don’t forget to sign up for the photo album and reserve March 24th for “Laugh til you Plotz.”
