Kramer's Remarks

“New Hornet’s Nest”?

As you know, the referendum for the Charlotte Hornets’ arena was defeated. For those of you who are fearful that the Hornets will leave, don’t despair. At the next Shalom Park expansion meeting I plan to bring up a new proposal. Why not, build the arena right here at Temple Beth El.

After all, we’re centrally located and just think of the possibilities. We could start each Friday night game with our Shabbat service. Attendance will surely increase. The parking revenues would be a great fundraiser. And there’s built in applause for a really great song from the Cantor. I’ve floated this idea around the park and as expected there are some naysayers.

They point out that our gift shop is not big enough to stock all the hats and shirts. The Rabbis will have to coordinate standing for the Avot with the wave. Some of the players will have to get used to wearing kippot instead of headbands. But I think it could all be worked out. And who knows, with a few prayers maybe we can make it to the finals next year. Let me know what you think so we can put an ad campaign together.

For now my slogan is “Friday nights are not just for services.” I know we can do better than that. In fact, that is a great idea for this month’s puzzle. Send your suggestions by letter, fax (704-366-1365) or email info@beth-el.com

Last month’s puzzle was to name ten parts of the body that had three letters. You actually came up with twelve that I could print - arm, leg, toe, hip, rib, ear, eye, lip, gum, jaw, gut and lap. There were several others that the censors eliminated. The winners were: Shirley Fytelson, Leon Karas, Sharon Damsky and Rita Mond.

Many of you have decided to honor someone by purchasing a seat back in the Blumenthal Sanctuary. There are still some available. This is a wonderful way to acknowledge someone. The cost of the plaque is $500 and during our challenge grant campaign the benefit to Temple Beth El will be $750. Call me if you have any questions.

Have a great summer and don’t forget to return your commitment renewal forms
