“Holidays, Celebrations and Secrets” I love being Jewish. My favorite Holiday is Passover. For me, it combines all of the wonderful aspects of our faith. We read the story of our people's struggles. We rejoice in our deep traditions. And, we celebrate with our family and friends. The Passover seder has always been an important event for my family. No matter where we are physically or mentally my family comes together and celebrates Passover. Of course, the form of the celebration has changed over the years. Today we are a far cry from the long and somber seder of my grandfather. My father managed to shorten the service and still add cd's and magic tricks. After he died, my brother in law, Mark shortened it even further and added live acting out of the plagues. But no matter what the length or decorum, I have so many memories that are conjured up each time we get together. I will always remember my Grandma Sadie being in the kitchen but coming into the dining room for the singing of dayenu. I will also remember that my older sister Lenore, inevitably would find the afikomen. Looking back, I'm pretty sure that she was my father's favorite and there must have been some conspiracy, but that is the topic for another article. Finding the afikomen is a great tradition, so this month’s contest is to read the Voice and find it. As you know, the second night Seder at Temple Beth El is Sunday, April 8th. On that night they won't be able to finish the Seder until the afikomen has been found. I have hidden the word “afikomen” somewhere in this bulletin. If you find it, email me at info@beth-el.com and I'll let one of the Rabbis know. Of course, there will be a special prize and don't worry, my sister doesn't read my articles. Speaking of celebrations, as you will note on page 10 of the Voice, the brotherhood and sisterhood are sponsoring a Cinco de Mayo celebration. I hope you will plan on attending. In addition to the fun and festivities, we will also be selecting the winner of our Trip to Israel raffle. Although the original trip was cancelled, another is in the works but even if you aren't planning to go, there will be a cash alternative prize. There is, of course, one hitch. You have to buy a ticket to win. Please call the office if you haven't received yours yet. I would like to thank all the clergy, staff and members of Temple Beth El who made my 50th birthday extra special! I can’t imagine how that one got by me. I hope Rabbi Bennett realizes only another 7 years and another ancient and old secret can be kept ........oops! |
