Say “YES” to Sisterhood
There's an incredible group of women at Temple Beth El! You probably
know some of them individually, but may not appreciate what they do
together. They are the Women of Reform Judaism - better known as the
Sisterhood.
Last year they met on the second Sunday of every month with featured guest
speakers to discuss topics such as "Mental Magic, Hypnosis to Heal you
Mind, Body and Spirit," and "The Role of Integrative Medicine in Women's
Health." They hosted a special dessert reception for Rabbi Jeremy Barras
and his wife Jodi to welcome them to Temple Beth El. They learned about
religious services that could take place at the home and made unique
Havdallah sets with Rabbi Judy Schindler.
In addition to attending these events, members of Sisterhood operate the
gift shop. Proceeds from the sales, go directly to help fund youth
activities. Last year, Sisterhood donated over $15,000 towards religious
school scholarships and more than $1,000 towards camp scholarships.
Through other fund raising efforts Sisterhood provided special gifts for
our confirmation class. The Youth, Education and Special Projects (YES)
Fund represents the ongoing commitment of Women of Reform Judaism to
strengthening the institutions of Reform Judaism and supporting its future
leadership. The fund consists of cash contributions as well as
contributions made by the purchase of Uniongram items from the YES Fund
collection. They are truly a wonderful organization and play a vital role
at Temple Beth El.
Last year's co presidents, Kelly Markiewitz and Lori Trapani did a
remarkable job in continuing the work of Sisterhood. They followed a long
line of tradition that began with Selma Melasky, Fay Green, Anita
Blumenthal and Elizabeth Klein and has continued to today. The President
of Sisterhood serves as an ambassador for Temple Beth El. She also is a
member of the Board of Directors and in that capacity helps guide our
professionals to carry out our mission. As luck would have it, the
position of President is available. Kelly and Lori are stepping down and
looking for someone to fill the vacancy. Could that person be you?
If you are interested give me a call and let's talk. Even if you are not
interested, call me. I'm sure I can find another way for you to volunteer.
Have a happy and healthy New Year.
