“There must be something!”
I have been working non-stop on balancing the Temple budget for next year.
I don’t have to tell you that these are tough times. Gifts of appreciated
stocks are becoming more and more rare. Expenses keep going up. We want to
continue to offer quality programming and services. So what can be done?
“I keep thinking, if only there was some great fundraiser. Something that
has never been done before. Not another dinner, or auction - something
original.” It became frustrating.
But just when I was about to give up hope – when that feeling of
desperation was beginning to set in – the idea came to me. Let’s invent an
Olympic event that our professionals can win. After all, there were some
pretty crazy events in Salt Lake City. My favorite was the Short-track
speedskating, which resembled the Roller Derby on ice. Figure skating is
out since our staff could only perform the triple Klutz instead of the
triple Lutz. We’re considering sending a team for Jews on the Luge for
2006 in Torino but what about Athens in 2004.
There has to be some event we could master. And after we win, think about
all the advertising revenue. The possibilities are endless. There will
probably be a bidding war for naming rights to the Temple. Just look at
the picture of our team! Surely we can win at something!
Those of you who attended the Purim Olympics got a glimpse of Speed
Davening, Megillah Lifting and the ever-popular Silent Amidah competition.
I know we can do it. We just have to think.
As usual, we need your help. Send in your ideas. There will be an award
for the most original new sport. You know how to do it. E-mail me at
info@beth-el.com, fax at 704-366-1365 or mail them to the Temple. I’ve
also included an opportunity for you to contribute financially for
training costs and transportation. Just complete the form and return it to
the office. We want to start training as soon as possible. Last month,
Bill Grifenhagen was the first to find the afikomen and received his
prize. Thanks to everyone who participated.
